ENVIRONMENT

There are many environmental benefits of artificial turf. We all know that it reduces the cost of home landscape maintenance, but did you know that it also benefits our environment? Let’s examine a few of the reasons:

Conserving water

Even though the drought has been drastically reduced, we should still keep conservation in our minds. Based on recent EPA water usage statistics, most American families use around 320 gallons of water per day. Approximately 30 percent of that amount is allocated for outdoor use. Most of this is used to water lawns and other gardening applications. At a national level, irrigation for residential landscapes is almost one-third of total water use, which totals almost 9 billion gallons per day.

Switching to synthetic grass almost entirely eliminates your home irrigation bill. You may have to sometimes use your hose to clean pet waste from the turf, but that’s about it.

Decreasing CO2 emissions

Some people genuinely like the act of mowing the lawn. It’s excellent for your physical health, but there are some problems with it. One is that it takes a long time, and the other is that the gas emissions from a lawnmower can contribute to global CO2 levels. As of March 2022, there are 418 ppm (parts per million) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is approximately 0.04 percent of our atmosphere, which is not ideal for the residents of our planet.

With the ever-fluctuating cost of gasoline and other fossil fuels, investing in artificial turf makes the most financial sense. While mowing your lawn may just seem routine, the carbon dioxide emissions can cause more pollution than you might imagine. With artificial turf, these problems simply vanish. Because artificial turf requires no mowing whatsoever, you are helping reduce pollution. The only real maintenance on artificial turf is occasionally having to brush away debris. Think of all the time you’ll save!

Less chemical runoff and contamination

Around 60 percent of fertilizer and other lawn chemicals are wasted and ultimately contribute to chemical runoff. As many of us know, chemical runoff can have devastating environmental consequences. Many of these chemicals are highly toxic to animals and insects and have the potential to decimate local ecosystems. They are also very dangerous to humans, particularly when consuming contaminated water.  Health problems such as birth defects and allergies are just a few of the effects of contaminated water exposure. With artificial turf, using maintenance chemicals like pesticides is absolutely unnecessary. In fact, in 2012, artificial turf installations prevented the use of 1 billion gallons of pesticides and fertilizers!

There are many more environmental benefits of artificial turf. At FieldTurf Landscape, we have been helping our customers switch from natural grass to artificial turf for years. Call us today!

BACKYARD ENVIRONMENT TURF TIPS
Tips to create an environment friendly artificial lawn

Environmentally-friendly landscaping is easy to achieve, more than you might think!

However, one pain point for homeowners who live in hot, dry climates is the landscaping required to maintain natural grass and shrubbery. Grass and other greenery require large amounts of water and maintenance, which can be wasteful in these arid environments.

Keep reading for 10 tips to help you create an eco-friendly landscape design:

1. Reduce Lawn Size

The most efficient way to reduce the amount of water you need for landscaping is to reduce the size of your lawn.  Plant large flower beds at the corners and edges of your lawn. This takes up valuable lawn real estate, adds dimension, and makes for a lovely seating area.

2. Utilize Hardscapes

Utilize hardscapes in your landscape design such as boulders, concrete, and stepping stones.

The whole family will undoubtedly use a seating area surrounded by boulders and plants! Alternatively, create a stepping stone pathway through your eco-friendly lawn to a shaded seating area.

3. Plant Wisely

Annual plants and flowers are beautiful – but require lots of water to maintain. Instead, plant perennials. They’re the most efficient choice when it comes to water requirements!

Additionally, plant your flower beds in the fall, when temperatures are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.

4. Layer Your Landscape

Layering is a powerful tool to strategically use lawn space while increasing the curb appeal of your home.

For example, line the edge of your property with shrubs, then layer shorter plants like native grasses in front of the shrubbery. Next, layer perennials and ground cover plants in planting beds. Not difficult, and looks great too!

5. Enhance Natural Slopes

Naturally occurring slopes and hills can sometimes create difficulty when landscaping. However, slopes also add dimension and are great for retaining walls and flower beds.

Be sure to use native shrubs, boulders, rocks, and ground cover in steep areas.

6. Amend The Soil

Nourish your soil with essential nutrients to ensure that plants thrive! Plant and animal-based organic fertilizers will help to improve the texture and condition of the soil.

7. Mulch

Mulch heavily in plant beds! Space out plants and use 2-3” of mulch between plants to reduce water loss and prevent weed growth.

It’s best practice to add at least 2 inches of new mulch each year.

8. Use Ground Cover Plants

Ground cover plants will normally grow close to the ground – so they can cover large areas, filling up space in plant beds.

Not only do ground plants stabilize sloping areas by preventing erosion, but they also work well as border plants. Ground plants come in a variety of colors and textures and can help reduce weed growth and cover bare spots in your garden.

9. Use Smart Irrigation

Smart irrigation systems help avoid excess water consumption. Particularly a drip-irrigation system, which delivers water directly to plants without wasting water.

Be sure to water only when necessary and turn off irrigation systems during periods of precipitation.

10. Install Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is becoming more popular because it requires little to no water, no fertilizer, and no pesticides – all very environmentally friendly aspects! Synthetic turf also decreases the amount of time, effort, and money normally associated with landscaping care and chores.

Common-Commercial-Applications-for-Artificial-Turf

When we think of artificial turf, there are usually two main uses that come to mind: athletic stadiums and residential backyards. But the grass goes much deeper. As a matter of fact, synthetic grass has unlimited potential for your commercial landscaping needs. Whether you’re operating a small mom-and-pop shop or a large facility on a massive plot of land, there are no shortage of ways that artificial turf can simplify your life and beautify your business.

Here are the top commercial uses for artificial turf.

Doggy Daycare

Pets can be rambunctious little creatures. That’s why we love them! But real lawns certainly don’t, as dogs in particular are just as likely to rip up a yard as they are to use it as a bathroom. Fortunately, artificial turf is incredibly durable and easy to clean, making it the ideal choice for doggy day cares, dog parks and other high-traffic pet facilities.

Golf Greens

There are many moving pieces when it comes to a golf facility, but one thing you’ll always need is a playable surface. Fortunately, artificial turf is an ideal solution for every step of the way. From putting greens to driving ranges, synthetic grass can do it all. Even better, it’s an excellent choice to keep your mini-golf facility looking fresh and green no matter the time of year (or how many people have been hacking balls on the tee).

Storefronts

Your shop has plenty of things that require your attention — lawn maintenance most certainly doesn’t need to be one of them. Even if it’s not getting much foot traffic, an artificial lawn can make for an aesthetically attractive addition to your retail space. If anything, it’s likely to turn heads when it looks so fresh, green and inviting year-round.

Indoor Athletic Facilities

Major sports teams love artificial turf, but it’s an affordable and simple solution for athletic facilities of any size. Whether you’re operating an indoor soccer field, a private tennis court or a track-and-field training facility, you’ll definitely benefit from the use of artificial turf. It’s easy to install, incredibly low-maintenance and much safer than natural grass.

Swimming Pools

Combining liquid, smooth concrete and lots of foot traffic, swimming areas can often be a slippery recipe for disaster. Fortunately, artificial turf makes for the ideal poolside choice because it offers plenty of traction while absorbing excess water. Synthetic grass does not stain or fade, even when coming in contact with pool chemicals. It also doesn’t create mud or grass blades, meaning it’s easy to keep your pool clean.

Children’s Play Areas

Playgrounds are another area where safety is paramount, and artificial turf is the ideal solution. Non-toxic and impossible to dig up, the landscape is incredibly easy to keep clean. Most importantly, it’s incredibly soft, meaning it will cushion falls and prevent injuries.

Communal Spaces

Whether you run an office building, a community center, an apartment building or any other sort of shared space, it’s a great idea to install artificial grass in your common areas. Not only does it greatly increase the aesthetic appeal and add a calming, relaxing zone to your business, but it can also cut down on maintenance costs in a major way.

Just About Anywhere Else

Artificial turf is the perfect choice for your commercial or residential landscaping needs, and our experts at FieldTurf will help you with any project, big or small. BACKYARD TURF TIPS

Any home transformation project is a sizable investment of both time and money, so it’s important to be an informed consumer before making any big decisions. Committing to artificial turf in particular can feel like a daunting task since the market is flooded with different products and companies, all of whom offer varying levels of expertise. Fortunately, we’re here to help with a handy guide to the artificial turf market.

Here are some things to consider to make sure your artificial grass investment is a wise one:

Know the Benefits

You might feel overwhelmed by choice and tempted to stick with organic sod instead. Don’t forget: there are many, many benefits to installing high-quality artificial grass. You’ll save countless dollars and hours by eliminating the need to mow, fertilize or maintain your grass. In the summer months, you’ll avoid astronomical water bills, and your yard will stay green through the winter. Dog owners will take comfort in the fact that their pet is less likely to dig up the lawn, nor destroy it with their play or, well, their business. In fact, with the right drainage you’ll be able to clean your lawn with a simple rinse. The benefits of artificial grass are numerous — as long as you make informed decisions when purchasing.

All in the Fabric

Though we often use the terms interchangeably, “turf” can describe shorter sports grass while “artificial grass” or “synthetic grass” (or even “fake grass”) describes landscape grass, which comes with longer blades. For both kinds of landscapes, there are two main materials used to craft them: polyethylene or nylon. Nylon is an outdated method for artificial lawns (and you can learn more about the history of artificial grass here). It’s often unappealing aesthetically, scratchy to the touch and prone to fading over time. The best artificial lawns use polyethylene, which is softer to the touch, better for foot traffic and more realistic in every way.

Fill It In

An integral part of an artificial lawn is the infill, which is a substance that weighs the turf down while keeping the grass blades erect. While some sales reps will try to tell you otherwise, turf without infill will get matted and flat in no time. There are plenty of infills on the market, with varying degrees of quality. Some companies offer a sand infill that has the consistency of kitty litter — but it also comes with the clumping and mess-making qualities of kitty litter. You will want to seek out an infill that offers some combination of sand and crumb rubber for the most natural, cushioned feel. Entirely synthetic infill is also an excellent choice.

Seek Trust

As with any growing industry, artificial turf is full of newcomers who lack expertise, longevity and general knowledge about what they’re doing. If you go with a newer company and they go belly up, you can say goodbye to your warranty. Instead, you should look for a trusted name in the industry. Call a customer’s previous clients, visit locations where they’ve installed turf and read online reviews to make sure you’re in the best hands.

Stick with FieldTurf

From backyards to condominiums to personal putting greens, artificial turf is an environmentally friendly landscape solution for every need. But there are many different companies making many different products, and it can be hard to navigate the market. Fortunately, FieldTurf Landscape is here to offer you the highest quality, longest lasting turf that looks and feels real while offering you many years of low-maintenance enjoyment.

Here are just some of the reasons why FieldTurf is the best choice for your artificial grass needs:

Eco System

When you choose FieldTurf Landscape, you’re not just buying a new lawn — you’re investing in an entire landscape system. This includes the preparation of your property, the turf backing, the infill used to keep the grass blades erect and the blades themselves. Crafted with the highest quality materials at our state-of-the-art facility in Calhoun, Georgia, the quality of our product stands on its own.

Total Drainage

An integral part of your lawn system is the turf backing. If it’s not made from the right material, it could lack the flow required to prevent your lawn from flooding. Fortunately, we’ve got it handled with the best drainage in the biz. The industry standard felt or hole-punch drainage can be inconsistent, but our proprietary MaxxFlow technology* will keep your lawn from flooding with up to 250 inches of water.

Aesthetic Perfection

The impeccable drainage also means you’ll be able to keep your lawn looking good as new by simply rinsing it off every once in a while. Other than that, it’ll stay green, fresh and good-as-new for years thanks to our high-quality, multi-colored blades, which look and feel exactly like real grass.

Artificial turf for sports facilities

From home sports surfaces to large-scale professional facilities, athletic fields can be a significant investment. And if you choose to use real grass, they can also prove to be a perpetual headache as you seek to maintain your property while also engaging in highly strenuous activities. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to keep your sports zone in tip-top shape without much effort: artificial turf.

Whether you want to use it for a personal residential project or a professional sports field, we got you covered. Our turf has been installed in thousands of homes and is used by two-thirds of the NFL’s teams, over 100 NCAA D-1 teams and over 500 municipal and recreational football fields across the country.

There’s no denying that we’re the most trusted name in sports turf, but the best part is that we’re also trusted in the home. That means we can scale our resources to fit your project, from a massive stadium to a personal putting green

Here are some of the top reasons why you should choose FieldTurf for your sports facility:

Multiple Uses

FieldTurf Landscape specializes in incredibly high-quality synthetic grass that can be used for numerous applications. Our turf is perfect for indoor sports centres, complexes or facilities of any kind as well as residential sport projects. It’s also perfect for indoor soccer fields, indoor baseball facilities, indoor tennis courts and other forms of indoor training facilities. We’re just as capable of helping you with your home applications, whether it’s a private indoor soccer facility, a putting or driving green, or just about anything else you can dream up.

Easy Installation

When you’re installing artificial turf indoors, the installation is incredibly easy. Our turf can be inserted on top of any standard flooring without the use of nails or glue. The result is a soft, high-performance artificial turf grass solution with very little preparation or work before the installation. You name the spot and our trusted experts can ensure a perfect installation.

Maximum Safety

FieldTurf Landscape offers an artificial turf that has been proven to be safer than natural grass by independent long-term and injury testing. In fact, our artificial turf has beat natural grass in biomechanical safety tests. That’s because we use a system composed of incredibly soft polyethylene blades and a patented blend of crumb-rubber and sand infill to keep the blades erect. The result is an incredibly soft, versatile and, most importantly, safe playing surface that absorbs falls while offering a pro-level playing experience.

Durability

When you choose FieldTurf Landscape, you’re choosing a low-maintenance, long-lasting design. Sports can wreak havoc on your property, but our lawns are designed to last for the long run. An indoor field surface has been designed to last 15-20 years. And since it doesn’t tear, stain or fade, it will stay looking its best the whole time.

Would you leave dangerous chemicals where children could reach them?

English bulldog running on artificial turf

Of course not! But many homeowners, not realizing that fertilizers, herbicides, weed-killers, and other yard care chemicals can be poisonous, store them casually where their dog might easily “sample” them. Ingesting these chemicals can cause immediate illness and negative symptoms, and may even cause death – so locking them away is a responsible action. New research, however, proves that dog owners should also be cautious about herbicides already dispersed on their lawns and public dog play areas. Dogs have more exposure to these chemicals than humans because they have considerably more direct ground contact with their paws and use their mouths and noses to explore and then clean themselves.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina and Purdue University collected and analyzed data to effectively show the negative impact of lawn chemicals on pets’ health. The scientists applied herbicides on lawns in different conditions — such as wet, dry, and freshly mowed. They were able to detect the chemicals 48 hours after application, and significantly longer in certain conditions.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to 2,4-D (2,4- dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a common household herbicide, can lead to blood, liver, and kidney toxicity. Furthermore, dogs exposed to weed killer 2,4-D are dying of cancer at two times the average rate, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Pet owners can eliminate these dangerous chemicals and keep their dogs safe with pet-safe lawn products or a FieldTurf Landscape Installation. FieldTurf Landscape’s artificial grass for dogs, with its revolutionary drainage capabilities and its realistic look and feel, make it the number one choice for pet owners. Because of its unmatched artificial dog turf durability, FieldTurf Landscape has proven to stand up to the most challenging of pets. Its low maintenance features make keeping a beautiful, problem-free dog-safe lawn all year long easy.

Renowned dog behaviorist Cesar Millan recently endorsed FieldTurf Landscape as his “turf of choice” because of its unmatched, pet-friendly characteristics.

“Not only does FieldTurf Landscape look just like natural grass, but it also helps to eliminate common lawn problems associated with pets, like brown spots from urine, tracked-in mud, and grass clippings, and it can even deter your dog from digging holes,” Millan said. “Here at the Dog Psychology Center we have a lot of land to cover, so it’s important to me that our water-conserving landscape is easy to care for, safe for our pack, and has proper drainage.”

Synthetic Grass Products & Installation – How to Install Artificial Grass

Needed Tools

Artificial grass material cut to your dimensions
(15’ width min/ 60 sq. ft. min orders).

Utility knife
Shovel/rake
Tape measure
Stiff bristled push broom
Stamper
Sand infill (at least 30 grit)
Landscape stakes/Recommended or Fabric stakes
Golf: Flag, pole & cup
Seaming Tape and adhesive

Design Phase

  • Proper Drainage: Is the current drainage system adequate? Will installing artificial grass require extra drains, grading, or sloping?
  • Soil Condition: Do you need to wet or soften the ground? Or use a jackhammer to remove large rocks? Rain-soaked soil may need a few days to dry before starting.
  • Irrigation: Are there sprinklers for remaining trees and plants? Or does irrigation need finishing first? Identify all below-ground irrigation and electrical lines that could get damaged.
  • Damage Prevention: Get supplies to prevent damage from rodents or animals. Rodent wire (like chicken wire) may help. Is there a dog that could pull up the grass? If so, secure the perimeter.
  • Existing Design: Is there a concrete border? Is it smooth? Will you need to nail into concrete? Install borders and edging first. This gives accurate grass measurements.
  • Measurements: Measure carefully to minimize seams. This reduces labor.
  • Design Tips: Note the grain direction. Install all sections in the same direction. Opposing grains may cause visible seams.

Ground Preparation

  • Underground Hazards: Locate all irrigation heads. Cap or remove unwanted heads. Verify irrigation works before starting. Do the same with electrical.
  • Removing Existing Material: Use a sod cutter, shovel, and pickaxe to remove grass, sod, roots, mulch, and rocks. Grade the sub-base.
  • Base Preparation: The base surface maintains the artificial grass. Spread 3/8” crushed stone evenly over the area. Use 1 yard per 100 square feet of grass. Remove 3-4 inches of existing landscape first.
    • Spread base material evenly. Grade and level for drainage. Shape as desired – flat, rolled, mounded.
    • Lightly wet the area. Compact the base until 90% compaction. When dry, the area should be smooth and firm.
    • Ensure the blade tops are 1⁄2” above the hardscape. Add blade height to base depth. Remove extra at edges. The area can slope slightly.
    • If needed, install rodent wire over the whole sub-base. Overlap squares. Staple wire to ground.
    • If needed, install perimeter boards or treated lumber.

If you want to add extra features, like a weed barrier, make sure you integrate it before laying down the artificial turf.

Artificial Grass Installation

  • Unroll the grass and stretch over the base. Don’t drag across the base. Lay it flat in the sun to remove wrinkles. Keep grain direction the same.
  • Cut the artificial grass to fit with a knife or cutter. Cut from the back to see stitches, and make sure you finish before seaming.
    • For curved edges, cut small increments to match design. Mark lines on the back with a silver marker as a guide.
    • If seaming two rolls, trim edges very straight. Lay adjacent on base in position. Match stitch lines for invisible seams.
  • Place the edges together, and line up stitches. Fold back edges and apply adhesive in a zigzag. Fold together over seaming material.
  • Secure around the seam. Use 6-7” landscape staples, alternating the sides every 6”. Place weight on seam while glue dries.
  • Attach the artificial grass to the border. The method depends on the border.
    • For treated lumber borders, nail every 3-6” with 20D or 40D nails.
    • For Polyboard borders, attach with an air gun.
    • If there’s no perimeter material, use 6-7” stakes 12” apart at edges.
  • Check irrigation and electrical before infill. Repair any damage and ensure they’re working.

Artificial Grass Infill

Proper infill installation is critical to maintaining your artificial grass system because the infill protects the turf blades and maintains level design. See the chart for amounts per grass type.

Common infill materials include washed sand and cryogenic rubber or acrylic coated sand.

  • Spread the infill evenly with a drop spreader. Don’t dump large quantities because that would make it hard to ensure even distribution. Likewise, don’t install wet infill to avoid clumping.
  • Place the infill in the drop spreader and set the dispenser gauge to 5 or Medium. Spread the infill liberally but evenly. Always install sand infills first. Spread 1⁄2 lb per pass.
  • Brush the synthetic fibers upright. Use a stiff-bristled industrial broom, Grandi Groom, carpet rake, or a power broom.
  • Repeat the infill process until 1⁄2 of blades are exposed above infill.
  • Water the entire artificial turf installation evenly to settle the infill. Adjust the infill again after it is dry.

Clean Up

Wash or sweep out and base material from the surrounding hardscape and clean up planter areas and swimming pools.

Care and Maintenance

Routine Maintenance

  • Use a leaf blower to remove organic materials. Switch to a landscaping rake for heavier objects. You can also use a stiff broom to “bloom” or fluff up the turf in high traffic areas. We recommend Harper #6924A.
  • Use a shop VAC for dry spills. Hold the hose above the surface to avoid removing the infill.
  • Check edges for weeds. Remove or use pre/post emergent like RoundUp.
  • If infill is disturbed, let dry, remove debris, and fluff with broom to redistribute.

Spot Cleaning or Disinfecting

  • Rinse sticky spills to avoid dirt sticking.
  • Use disinfectants if needed, but make sure to rinse it after to avoid residue.
  • Remove food waste quickly to avoid pest problems.
  • Get rid of paint with paint thinner or remover, then rinse off the residue with water.
  • Use ice to remove gum.

Pet Clean-Up

  • Remove solid waste normally, then wash off urine and poop residue.
  • Apply pet-friendly enzyme cleaners to bathroom spots to eliminate odors.

Putting Green Installation Highlights

  • A backyard putting green installation process, including proprietary “TourFringe,” a true apron cut, providing the distinctive “3-cut” putting green look like real greens.
  • Home putting green installation process including moguls, tiers, bulkheads, and bunkering reminiscent of real course designs of Palmer, Nicklaus, Dye, and Doak.
  • A “contoured elevation” practice putting green synthetic turf installation resulting in spectacular and realistic aesthetics, with “flow” and “subtleties.”
  • Pure and “tight” professional putting surface with conditions replicating tour greens.
