Customers Understand Water Better Than They Understand Turf
Ask a customer to picture “high face weight” and most people draw a blank. Ask them to picture a soggy patch of yard, a wet dog tracking mud across a patio, or a pool deck that stays slick for an hour after someone gets out — and everyone has that picture instantly, usually from their own experience.
This is why drainage doesn’t need translating the way most specs do. The customer already has the reference point. Your job is just connecting that reference point to the system you’re recommending.

A single question does most of the explaining for you: “Where does the water go right now?” Most customers haven’t thought about it in those terms, and the pause that follows is usually the moment they start picturing the answer — the low spot that never quite dries out, the corner where the dog’s waste sits until someone hoses it down, the patio that puddles after every storm.
Once they’re picturing that, the follow-up is simple: “This system is built so the water goes straight through instead of sitting on top.” You’ve turned an abstract spec into an answer to a problem they were already picturing.
Why Pooling and Odor Are a Backing Problem, Not a Fiber Problem
Customers who’ve had a bad experience with turf before — or heard about one from someone else — often assume the fiber itself is the issue when turf smells or holds water. It’s worth correcting that gently, because it’s usually not true. The fibers on top rarely cause pooling or odor. The backing underneath does.

Drainage carries the most weight in a handful of situations, and it’s worth leading with it specifically in those cases rather than treating it as a feature to mention everywhere. Pet owners who’ve dealt with odor or muddy paws are often more persuaded by a drainage explanation than by anything else in the pitch. Pool surrounds need water to clear fast so the deck isn’t slippery. Customers in wetter climates, or anyone who’s had standing water on their property before, respond strongly to a system built specifically to move water through rather than let it sit.
In dryer climates or lower-moisture applications, drainage still matters for long-term performance, but it won’t be the detail that closes the deal the way it will for a customer who’s dealt with a soggy yard or a smelly pet area for years.
